Online Blues Guitar Lessons For Free

I have tried to find some of the best online resources for blues guitar lessons available for free on the web today. I will keep this Hub in a constant state of updating so I can weed out some of the sites that don't measure up.

Guitar has long been a huge part of blues, and while not all blues music contains the guitar, if you ask 100 people on the street what instrument they think of when you say blues I'll bet you a huge majority will say "The Guitar"

Blues music is based around a I - IV - V chord progression over 12 bars of music, because of this we have the term 12 Bar Blues which is the most basic and common form of blues music. From this form many different artists have gone on to create variations and stylistic differences to give us the wide variety of blues music we have today.

If it weren't for the blues, we wouldn't have Jazz, Rock, Pop music as we know it, Led Zep, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Tragically Hip and a million other different artists and styles, it is truly at the root of most modern guitar based music and many artists trace a lot of influence back to early blues music such as Son House and Robert Johnson.

When first learning blues guitar it is essential that you understand what a I - IV - V chord progression is. For those of you that are wondering what the heck I am talking about, I IV V simply refers to the first, fourth and fifth chords contained within a major scale. For example if we were going to play a standard blues in the key of A the I chord would be A the IV chord would be D and the V chord would be E. Once you understand this than you need to add 7th's to these chords, so in the key of A we would play an A7 a D7 and an E7. This is very basic and there is a lot that needs to be added to this info but that is the starting point.

For blues solos you should familiarize yourself with the 'blues scale' and the 'pentatonic box' a simple google search will explain these scales in further detail.

One of the best ways to develop your "feel" is to learn some of the most popular solos by guitarists that you admire. I highly recommend learning some solos note for note by guitarists like Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, and check out some of the guitar work from The Fabulous Thunderbirds who have had an excellent rotating case of guitarists like Stevie's brother Jimmie Vaughn.

PLEASE Leave me some comments or suggest a resource, it can be a website, a pdf, a video anything as long as it is to do with how to play the blues guitar!

Blues guitar has so many different styles. Blues guitar has so many different techniques. There's a huge number of ways to pick blues guitar. Even though I like the old legends, some of the more modern 'legends', like Stevie Ray Vaughan also impress me. Genius is genius, no matter when the music was made. For me, it seems that it all came from the roots, that's why I keep returning there. You can detect the sounds of Broonzy and other legends in all modern rock. Also, ragtime guitar can be heard in some jazz. Students starting to learn the guitar would be advised to start from the beginning and make their way forward until they find their passion.
